November Alumni Breakfast

Bruce Beach, Chairman and CEO of Beach Fleischman, spoke at our alumni breakfast on Creating a Community Movement: Lessons from the Festival of Books. Bruce, along with friends Brenda and Bill Viner, began the festival which has fast become one of the largest in the country. He recommends that we, as community leaders, “not shy away from big problems.” In order to increase literacy, he felt it necessary to instill a love of reading in our community. A similar bottom up approach was taken with Jeannette Mare, founder of Ben’s Bells. She spoke on her journey of grief as an inspiration to alleviate suffering for those who are grieving by teaching kindness. She says, “It takes faith and guts to build from the bottom up.”
